Sherry Ratay
Colorist/Salon Owner
One of the highlights of my day at Premiere Orlando was my interview with Sherry Ratay. Sherry, Colorist and owner of Salon Ratay has been in the beauty industry for 19 years and has no plans of letting go now. Sherry is a wife, mother, mentor, educator and a dedicated woman who is empowered to continue simply by her ability to create and see her visions come to life. Sherry has won several awards for her work as a colorist and Salon Ratay has been voted as "Best Hair Salon" by Orlando Magazine.
Sherry believes that while formal education is important, “Behind the Chair” is where the stylists receives what is needed to fulfill the journey. “Education along with experience is the greatest teacher”, said Sherry. Even as a teacher herself, Sherry still is being mentored. Sherry continues to work in her salon and is there with her staff leading and guiding them to be great.
Sherry and I after the interview
Sherry and inspiration…
"I’m inspired by beautiful hair and the drive to create. I am fulfilled when I know that what I share with others transforms them. Seeing my passions fulfilled and a desire to create keeps me inspired."
Sherry’s daily motto…
"Don’t allow petty things to affect your day” and “Surround yourself with positive people who are going in the direction of where you want to go."
Can I color hair like that?
You're the new kid on the block at Salon Ratay but don't fret, Sherry is the queen of the castle and there to guide you all the way. "In my world, there's a way that I do it. My staff will also do it this way. I take my staff and allow each stylist to learn by doing. It may override what the stylist learned in school, but it's a different world. I allow my stylists to learn from me. They just don't see me doing the hair, they do it." Sherry believes "Behind the Chair" is where the passion comes to life, and so why not live.
RB: What's your secret skill?
SR: Operating with an open mind. Sherry talks about not being afraid of crossing the lines. Going with the flow can sometimes benefit you more than you think.
RB: You're a (S)hero...Wonder Woman or Cat Woman?
SR: "OH, Cat Woman for sure!!! It's my way and with hair, it better be right!"
RB: What are your top 3 beauty products?
SR: (1) Borghese Body Lotion (2) shoes (3) healthy, shiny hair ...AND our invisible #(4)...Lipstick!
RB: You're invisible and you changing the hair of a male and female celebrity?
SR: I the beautiful Julia Roberts as a gorgeous red head is what I'd like... I can't forget Drew Barrymore, she'd be lovely as a red head too! Donald Trump would look GREAT (I smile) with his hair color changed and just accept that, "it's okay". My last wish would be Brad Pitt, he needs a clean-up scruffy look.
RB: Who does Sherry love right now? Who's rocking it?
SR: I like Jennifer Lopez right now. Her recent looks on American Idol have been great and she's rocking it from head to toe!
RB: What would you do if you woke up tomorrow and all of your professional accomplishments were gone? Everything that you have worked hard for was no longer here?
SR: I would rebuild it!
RB: Is it that easy?
SR: Of course! My success first lies internally. I am passionate about what I do, who I am and I will always be able to create. So, yes it is that easy.
Thank you for allowing me to share my moment with Sherry Ratay with you.

I want to own a salon?
Ok, so you can do great hair. Lots of people can do hair but it's more than that. Like anything else it's a business and we have to make business moves. As a stylist, it is important to understand that we are service providers. In all that we do, we're giving. How we handle business is important and you can't forget those money management skills. In order to build a have a reputable salon, you have to know what you're making and where it's going. Sherry whole-heartily shares that this is about "The Full Circle". If you don't understand this, you won't make it without a few unnecessary falls. Sherry says, "be authentic" and operate "The Full Circle" because it builds retention for you with your clients."Can I color hair like that?
