My Freelance Makeup Artist Rules [Part 1]

There's a reason we have rule.  Guidelines that are imperative for a successful journey. No matter what you do, you must have a set of governing acts that you follow. It helps shape the best results for You.

Here are a few that I've adopted...

Rules are random, no special order.

1. Make time for research.  I call this my "office hours work".  Most of the projects that I work on happened because I searched the info, emailed the right people and got a yes and the right time.
2. Network. Everywhere you go.  GET CARDS from everyone! Leave no stone un-turned.  Have your cards handy, as well.  I make it a major practice to introduce myself, being clear that I'm a Makeup Artist.  This happens either by intro or during the conversation.  Networking is about, "what you can do for them." So I always make sure they are aware that I am a Makeup Artist and where I'm located.  A lot of people will refer you, so making sure they know where you are is important.
3. The GET CARDS RULE: I make a note of always getting their card, even if they don't have mine. This is because I can always find them.  They may have my card, but forget me.  If I know the potential referral or client is in Nashville and I am going to Nashville, it becomes my perfect chance to possibly book work!
4. Be nice!  People remember you.  Your name comes up in the conversation over coffee.  They remember your smile.  They remember how nice you were.  They remember how you complimented them on their attire.  They remember that you didn't have an attitude.  They remember...
5. Call & Email!.  Keep yourself on their radar.  I recently wanted to work on a project with a singer.  I wasn't sure how to contact the manager, so I Googled until I was able to get the info.  I was a little apprehensive about it, but I did it anyway.  The manager emailed me back.  They were covered for the project, but HE DIDN'T TELL ME NO.  He actually asked me to forward all of my information and he would keep me in mind for the future.  Now, all I have to do is stay accountable to myself and follow up when they return to the area.
6. Stay ready! I know you've heard the saying, "you ain't got to get ready if you stay ready".  Keep your kit organized, brushes cleaned and resume updated.  I also keep a folder on my phone and laptop with all of my information.  This includes contracts, images and invoices, along with my resume.  If you're out of town for the day and you get an email from a potential client, you still want to be prepared to contact them immediately.  If you have your info save on your phone/email, you can do it. You don't want to miss out on booking a client because you responded too late.
7. Don't compare your resume to another artist for criticism, but for encouragement. Find someone you can look up to and strive to be like them as it relates to artist ability, work ethic and skill.

Male Grooming & PGA Golf

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of working with PGA Golfer, Brandt Snedeker and Golf Channel host, Gary Williams on Sea Island.  When I started on my journey of being a Makeup Artist, Male Grooming wasn't actually on the list but I so glad it's apart of what I do.  Truth be told, men are easy to work with and easy breezy on set. The project was for Peter Millar and I can't wait to see the ending result.  I'll be sure to share the commercial with you guys!

Dear Frances:

Slow down! Your mind is going a 1,000 miles a minute with a few things that don't concern you. You are right where you need to be.  Enjoy the blessings and accomplishments that you've experienced thus far.  Yes,  you should be inspired by the joys of others, but just because your pace doesn't seem as fast does not mean that you won't get there.  You'll experience levels of uncertainty on this journey, but it's just a reminder to stay faithful.  Keep going. Keep pressing forward on your goals. Keep up with what's going on with Frances and don't become pressured with what seems to be someone else's success.  You have what it takes. You're passionate, genuine and focused.  Just always be focused on your goals and aspirations. What you've accomplished to this point is great, so stay focused and keep working hard. It's all going to work out.

#NYFW Backstage Beauty: @MehronMakeupNYC meets @MalanBreton at Pier 59 Studios

I covered backstage beauty for Mehron Makeup during NYFW for their sponsored show with Taiwan born designer, Malan Breton.

The look was designed by Key Makeup Artist, Dani Fonseca. The inspiration came from the classic American beauty, Marilyn Monroe.  I loved the 1950's inspiration. Beautiful porcelain skin, red lips and a beauty mark is definitely a way to set the mood for the runway!

The beauty mark gave just the right touch for the "Marilyn look"

Fonseca used Mehron's Celebre' HD Pro Foundation to create flawless skin.

Mehron's Fuller Eye Lashes were used to complete the eyes with 

Natural Wheat and Carbon Eye Powders.

Pearl Precious Gems was also blended to soften the eye.

Cheeks were contoured with Mehron's Cocoa Eye Powder 

and Geranium Cheek Cream was used to add a pop of color.

THE MAKEUP ARTIST THAT NEVER GROWS

I decided to Google my name.  I've done it before so it wasn't a big deal, nor did I expect to find something that I had never seen before. Well, that is just the opposite.  

I saw title to a post that was unfamiliar to me and without hesitation selected it first.  It's a post by Jonathan Chick of Clarus Photography.  Immediately upon viewing the post my heart starting beating really fast.  I wanted to email him and ask, "Sir, can you Pleeeeeease remove this post?" In my mind, it does represent the best level of my work so I started to feel less-pleased with myself.

As I looked at the post, it hit me that, "it's ok!" It's okay because it represents the growth that I have elevated to over the years.  

Thankful for growth.

As a human.

As an artist.

As a woman.

As a creative being.

Thankful for growth! 

"Balancing My Act" with Danielle Knox for Lifetime TV

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to reveal the beaute of Danielle Knox, Host on Lifetime TV's hit show for women, The Balancing Act!  The show was taped with a live audience during The Southern Women's Show in the beautiful city of Jacksonville, FL.

I always enjoy working with awesome people.  It confirms that anything is possible when everyone is on one accord and ready to get the job done.  That's just what happened with The Balancing Act team!

It was an extreme pleasure working with Danielle.  She's much of a beauty girl and that made the experience even better. I did a purple smokey bronze eye, lots of cheek action and beautiful skin! 

My prized possession beauty product would have to be the Hi-Definition Hydrating Mineral Perfecting Powder by Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics. Wheeew, did this powder save the day!!! I don't know what I would have done without it.  Lights, camera, action is more like... lights, lights and more lights. If you're looking for a powder that works very well against shine and provides lasting results, try it!

Savannah FASHION'S NIGHT OUT!

I had the most amazing time at Savannah FNO! The NYC bug was on me baaaaad! Surprisingly, because the stylish Lovemuffins of Savannah showed up and out.... it kinda felt just like NYC!

It was such an honor to work alongside, Jules of Dollface by Jules who keyed the makeup for the event. This beautiful young lady is a powerhouse Makeup Artist and I'm thankful to be connected with her.

Our team rocked! We glammed up over 50 models for the show. The Savannah FNO team did an awesome job! 1 street. 2 runways. Fashion at it's best, genius!

If you're in the Savannah area, get ready for February! I'm sure the team at @FNOsav are prepping to bring the best in fashion back to the runways of Broughton!

The Makeup Show {Miami '08 Recap}

The very first MAKEUP SHOW I attended was in Feb. '08 in the beautiful city of Miami.  I packed my bag, drove an hour to the airport, and was on a 6am flight. I spent the day at the show and was headed back home to Georgia the same evening.  I was determined to be inspired, meet some of my favorite artists and shop shop shop!  I still have my notebook with all the brand literature and business cards I got.  I purchased items from Cinema Secrets, Mehron, Face Atelier, Auraline Beauty, Crown Brushes, MAC Pro, OCC, Myrabelle Products, and Three Custom Color Specialists.

I was just about 2 years into discovering this new found love of artistry and makeup.  I had been researching online and familiarizing myself with makeup artists and gaining a few favorites along the way.  I was like a BIGkid in the candy store.  I decided I wanted to learn and eat from the master's table so to speak.  So there was no better place to be served from the best other than The Makeup Show! I was in the midst our of modern day Makeup Masters!  Looking back, I wish had known what I know now about networking and blogging.  Now that I am blogging and sharing my experiences with the world, I'm really excited about my trip to the New York show in May.  I'm still very grateful for my journey thus far.  Every day I am learning and finding out something new about cosmetics, tools and expanding my craft. Here's a little picture story of my 1 day visit to Miami...

The Epitome of Beauty

Just a moment for me to introduce myself...

Frances Williams is passionate about the art of makeup and beauty. In 2006, after directing a for a fashion show, she identified a passion for beauty. The drive that she experienced birthed what we now recognize as Revelations of Beauty. Over the span of two years, she fed her passion and expanded her knowledge of the beauty industry. She has received training from Celebrity Makeup Artist Billy B, The Powder Group and M.A.C. Cosmetics. As an artist, she concentrates on designing looks that are inspired by each client's individual personality. She works to enhance the beauty of women by helping them find that “thing” that stands out about them. Frances believes that if you are aware of your beauty, you can be beautiful. She continues to enhance her education by way of attending workshops and seminars taught by some of the leading artists in the beauty industry. For this artist, there is only one rule “it’s not about product, it’s about application”. There's only one question left to ask, "Have you had your beauty revealed?"
